What is an Antivirus Software
Antivirus software are computer programs that attempt to identify, neutralize or eliminate malicious software. The term "antivirus" is used because the earliest examples were designed exclusively to combat computer viruses; however most modern antivirus software is now designed to combat a wide range of threats, including worms, phishing attacks, rootkits, trojan horses and other malware. Antivirus software typically uses two different approaches to accomplish this:
- examining (scanning) files to look for known viruses matching definitions in a virus dictionary, and
- identifying suspicious behavior from any computer program which might indicate infection.
The second approach is called heuristic analysis. Such analysis may include data captures, port monitoring and other methods.
Most commercial antivirus software uses both of these approaches, with an emphasis on the virus dictionary approach. Although some people consider network firewalls to be a type of antivirus software, this categorization is not correct.Keep reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antivirus
Tony: So, the two aces to count with a minimum level of security are an Antivirus and a Firewall. Thise article provides the basics about antivirus software, by Wikipedia. Please help wikipedia with your filantropic donations. HTH. Tony.

- Your firewall/anti virus blocked access.
OR
- You clicked on the link and the link did not work (presuming that you have not installed anything or provided your password).
OR
- You clicked on the link and you refused to provide your login details or installing new components.

Firewall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A firewall is a device or set of devices configured to permit, deny, encrypt, or proxy all computer traffic between different security domains based upon a set of rules and other criteria.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewall
As I wrote in a previous posting, there are two basic components in our desktop's security. The Firewall guarantees your local information will not be stolen, spyed on, altered or destroyed in the worse scenario. It will also prevent attacks that could disrupt your Internet link or make it terribly slow.

Security and Privacy starts at home :)
Security and Privacy starts in our own home. How can we secure our dear home desktops? Basically, there are two important aspects of safety to cosider. The first is the integrity of our data, and for that we must always install an "Antivirus" software. Secondly, is the authentication and authorization to use our data. The simplest thing to do is to install a software which blocks any open door in our home computer. This kind of software is called a "Firewall". Nowadays, software security suites often come bundled together with an Antivirus solution and a Firewall solution. You do not need to pay extra money for them, as thanks to Open Source and Free Software you can get them for nothing. Open Source solutions are often more reliable since they are updated very often by millions of users worldwide. In my case, I use Kmyfirewall and Klam Antivirus because I operate in a Linux environment. Linux is less prone to virus attacks but equally prone to unauthorized access attacks. For those who use windows software, I recommend you visit this link where you can get reviews both for firewalls and antivirus suites. HTH. Tony.

"One of the primary issues facing consumers in the digital era is control of their private data. Yesterday I wrote about the Peter Jennings special “No Place to Hide” which covered a lot of the issues facing consumers."
