Firewall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A firewall is a device or set of devices configured to permit, deny, encrypt, or proxy all computer traffic between different security domains based upon a set of rules and other criteria.

As I wrote in a previous posting, there are two basic components in our desktop's security. The Firewall guarantees your local information will not be stolen, spyed on, altered or destroyed in the worse scenario. It will also prevent attacks that could disrupt your Internet link or make it terribly slow.
